... there is the school fundraiser/walk when the whole school goes out walkies over the hills and back again....( using hospital road as a crossing point NOT up by the cedars as a matter of interest)

Grrrrr

This is a typical example of what happens when people misunderstand the situation.

When the crossing is installed by Green Lane across the A350, it will be safer for the school to arrange the route so that the crossing point is using the new crossing.

That was the whole bloody point of having a new crossing and putting it somewhere safe for the children to cross on their way to Wellhead Lane in the first place!

Russell, can you clarify something over the location of the crossing.

Did the area board have any input as to the location? Or was it a case of the area board requesting a crossing somewhere on Warminster Road and then left it to Council engineers to decide the location?

Thank you.

At the first Westbury Area Board meeting on 23 July 2009, everyone who attended (about 80 people) was asked to identify their top 5 priorities for action by the Area Board and a vote took place by the people themselves. People were able to suggest their own ideas or issues or use a list of about 60 suggestions, which included an A350 pedestrian crossing by the Cedar Hotel about halfway down the list. I compiled the list which was based on the main issues I was aware of as a long-standing Westbury Councillor and using my knowledge of what is feasible and not feasible.

Two issues tied for 5th place, so we got 6 top issues.

The top 2 issues BY FAR were:

1st - Traffic relief for the A350
2nd - Pedestrian Crossing over the A350 by the Cedar Hotel.

I can't remember the order of the others, but they were:

- Implementing the Vision for Westbury Projects
- Tacking Anti-social behaviour in the town centre
- Location of the main PO
- Re-opening the enquiries desk at the Police Station

The Area Board then asked, via me as Chairman, for these issues to be tackled by the Council and its officers as a priority.

The issue of the A350 crossing was a hot and topical one at the time as there had been a long campaign by residents with a petition presented to the town council a few months or weeks earlier. This campaign had been supported vocally by Cllr Mike C-M.

I am simply not aware of any significant campaign for any other crossing on the A350. Whilst people do ask for other crossings in other locations all the time, there was only one clear location with a heavy campaign behind it, and with rational reasons and with the backing of the Matravers head teacher, and where engineers had told me was the only realistic location in highway traffic management terms anyway .....

Shizzy iam sorry you found my comments abusive as I did yours .
time to move on one thinks!
The incident you are making now clear was a very much public scenario which was of not my making and at the time if I could have pasted it and posted I would have , and would have been quite justified in doing so, concerning the legal implications at the time concerning the case which was indeed in the process of heading towards the High courts of Justice in London  and a certain outcome would have followed any legal action for defamation ,a few people had their fingers in the mess discretly  and behind the scenes out of any public knowledge which was both wrong for the office they held.It was after I made it quite clear I would reveal all publicly that certain things happened and full apologies came from pub watch and a certain few others.

This was a very different scenario and it was also a message neither wanted or required  and as the case came to its final climax that was the time I wanted to reveal all to the public exactly what was really going on as all that was in the press was Pubwatch propaganda initiated by 3 people with very different agendas, that was only attempted by me after an awful 12 weeks of saying nothing personaly and having to endure constant bereated attacks from pubwatch. As for a personal message no I would not paste on any forum normaly but that was a very different  and totaly isolated and very much needed public publication in the unsolcitited form it was sent, it was that reason i attempted it, to very much show what certain persons where doing there was more than that message ,but i let it all go which was best for all in reality and to be honest if the public really knew the full details if it had actualy gone the full circuit they would be horrified and a lot of very red faces , mine excluded.
Again Shizzy I apologise if you found my post abusive.

Tony has very kindly sent me a lovely letter today apologising for his mistake and I have thanked him and accepted .
We all make silly mistakes sometimes and I would urge Tony to not leave this forum and lets all put this behind us learn from it and move on, time is too short to be falling out and arguments .

I can now confirm the exact location proposed:

The new traffic-light controlled crossing (ie. Pelican Crossing) will cross Warminster Road (A350) exactly in line with the footpath running up the western side of Wellhead Lane (at the junction with the A350).

ie. the footpath that also runs along the flank wall of the end of terrace house there on the western side of the grassed area by the junction of Wellhead Lane and Warminster Road.

This is about 6 yards or so west of the road part of Wellhead Lane at the junction with the A350.

Construction will occur in the Summer 2010.  It cannot be done earlier because some detailed design-work is still being done and then Traffic Regulation Orders have to be published first.

A good result all round for the residents who will use this crossing its what was asked for in the area board and after the hard work of sarah wiseman and myself its finally been achieved .

bit risky having a pelican crossing at a junction. vehicles turning right coming out of the hotel and cars vehicles turning left from wellhead.  potential accident spot.. would have been better to have the crossing down by green lane between there and the bus stop.
don't buy the sun. don't read the sun. don't look at the website.

it will if anything STOP a lot of the speeding along that road....right on a brow of a hill....  will probably be a pain for lorries and buses to stop and start on the hill going up.. but there ya go...cant please everyone...

now if something could be done about speeding traffic going up chalford past the bell out of westbury and coming in it would be a lot safer.. i came out of wellhead drove this morning after listening to make sure it was all clear because you certainly cant see out either way and i only just made it before a car came haring up doing about 60.... it had to nerve to flash n beep me so he got a hand signal back ttelling him to slow down... supposed to be 30 there going in and coming out of westbury...  that is a terrible junction there..always has been..  still  i wont have to be coming and going out of there much longer  :)
