Chancel repair indemnity insurance in Westbury.
« on: August 23, 2010, 18:51:20 pm »
Does anyone know much about this? is it needed when buying a house in Westbury? All I can find out is it is an ancient law that allows the church to claim money from home owners who have homes on land once owned by the church if repairs are needed on the local church.

Yeah that's basically it, it happens in other parts of the country too. If you're buying, you can normally get the vendor to pay, it's about £100 I think normally.

And there was talk of it being abolished in most cases, but not sure when........

So you reckon it is something that someone should get when buying here in Westbury?

I had never heard of it before today.
Looks like its being scrapped in 2013, I wonder if the church will fall down before then?lol

Lol, the solicitor will tell you if you need it. I don't think the mortgage lender insists on it normally...............

I guess you'd be suing your solicitor if he hadn't told you!

Yes, I read that earlier, scary! just wondered if everyone who buys homes in Westbury has this insurance, as I had never heard of anything like it.The seller is unlikely to pay this amount.
So its the norm for a solicitor to bring this up?, oh I am so new at all of this!
The house in question is 30 years old and in a quite heavily populated part of town.

Your solicitor would advise if it's required, I think the seller would pay if it meant you pulling out otherwise............!
