i don't see the point. the majority of people are reasonably to well behaved, and why should they suffer because of a minority.

also, does it make a society safer and acceptable when the peers are the ones who are more corrupt?

what's it all about at the end of the day...it'll be just an exercise

I think it should replace a prison sentence ...this community punishment  is a joke picking up paper or cutting grass.. that's not a punishment most people do that every day.. make them pay for there crime ( if you can't do the time don't do the crime ) bloody send the lot on national service...why should we pay for them to have lux rooms 3 meals a day heating and tv.. when we all have to earn to have a little lux these day's.

I agree with Rosebud, if you're young and you commit a crime, you should be forced to do National Service. Community Service is and is treated like a joke.

I think it would be a good Idea to bring it back. Trouble is, Youngsters have had too long in a 'you can't tell me what to do' world that all the 'do gooders' would be campaigning against it because it was an infringement of human rights!!

well, when youngsters see that the older people are corrupt, no wonder they get into all sorts of scrapes... if they can do it, why can't we

think some people still don't grasp the logic.. older people lead by example and all that

Like I said I think it should be used to deter crime........................otherwise the majority suffer for the minority of mindless amoeba brained rats that roam the streets!

I don't see any benefit in it really. I think it's easy to look at the past and say 'things were better back then, people were much better behaved' - I personally don't think it's true.

Rather than waste time bringing back an archaic form of discipline we should use that money (who knows where it would come from) to invest in education.

Then you would need to educate the parents as this is often where the root of the problem lies. How many times do you see parents bawling and swearing at kids these days, as well as putting them down?

It's no good trying to educate the children when the environment they grow up in is the issue.

I don't think we should, we have a volunteer defense force and as such the people who are there want to be there.   That is why our forces are the best in the world because they don't have personnel who are forced into it and don't want to be there.   I totally agree with educating parents and children as to their responsibilities in life but to force people into the armed forces is not the best way forward for a professional fighting force, in my opinion.

actually, it was a hanging offence if you stole a potatoe becuase you were hungry.

how many people were hanged for things they did not commit?

if theyr'e going to sort out the problems of society, it has to come from the top down, not the bottom up.

things have gone too far beyond repair anyway, the early 1990's started the rot and britain is suffering for it now.. beyond repair i'm sorry to say.

some people can be helped, some people don't get the help, society does not want to help, the authorities try to help as minimalistic as possible.

kids were running amock in the 70s but that doesnt mean they were thieving cars lol.

people can disipline themselves. no need to go to camp to do that
