Majorettes and marching bands will parade through the streets of Warminster tonight for the last carnival in Wessex this year.

Thousands are expecting to line the streets for the event, which will be led by the Warminster Lions’ float from Boreham Road at 6.45pm.

The Lions will be followed by the main procession at 7pm, led by the region’s town criers and fire brigade and will move along East Street, Market Place, High Street, and George Street.

Ten large floats will be joined by 62 walking groups, including Warminster Carnival Royalty, 1st Warminster Brownies and the Warminster and District Foodbank.

Sandra Major, who has been carnival committee chairman for 13 years, said: “We’re expecting between five and six thousand people – it’s the last on the Wessex circuit so it’s always a big one.

“Just to see the children on the streets is worth all the organising. It’s great to get the community together.”

This year’s event, which is expected to last about two hours, will raise money for Salisbury Hospice and the Rose Trust, which looks after under privileged children in Warminster.

“We wanted to do something for the local community and we’ve also noticed that a lot of people from the town are going to Salisbury Hospice so we wanted to help them too,” said Mrs Major. “We’re hoping to raise about £3,000, which was the total raised last year.”

The grandmother also announced that this year’s event will be filmed and sold as a memento DVD.

The carnival committee has organised a fundraising race night at The Old Bell in Market Place, Warminster, at 7pm tonight (Friday). Tickets, £7.50 , including fish and chip supper, are available from Mrs Major on 01985 217050. She can also be contacted for DVDs of tomorrow’s event.

Procession route

6.45pm Procession starts with Warminster Lions Float from Boreham Road.

7pm Fire brigade and town criers set off.

The remaining floats and walking groups will follow from Boreham Road, through East Street, Market Place, High Street and George Street.
