Around 250,000 new plastic and cardboard recycling bins are being rolled out to households around Wiltshire.Homes in the west of the county will get their bins soon, ahead of a planned start date of November 7 for collections in Bradford on Avon, Westbury, Trowbridge, Melk-sham and Warminster. The first homes to have a delivery of the blue-lid bins were in the north of the county. The final few bins were being sent out there this week, before the area’s new recycling service is launched on Monday.Bins will be collected once a fortnight, with normal household waste collected in the alternate week.Recycling rates in the north of the county are currently at 26 per cent, which is lagging behind west Wiltshire with 44 per cent.It is thought that the current weekly waste collection in north Wiltshire is holding back the recycling rate there. The council hopes that increasing recycling collections and reducing the frequency of other waste collections in the northern area will bring up recycling figures to match the rate in west Wiltshire. There will be no changes to the current fortnightly black box collection, or the fortnightly green waste collection, which is a free, opt-in service.Households are now being given advice about the types of plastics they can recycle in the blue-lidded bins.Tracy Carter, the council’s service director for waste services, said: “We are recycling plastic bottles only from the kerbside.“This is because plastic bottles are normally made of good quality plastics and there’s a stable market for these plastic types.“Other plastic types can cause problems when the plastic bottles are recycled.“Many councils are restricting their collections to plastic bottles only, to ensure the highest quality of material is collected.“If there are too many other types of plastics in the bin, the whole truck full may be sent to landfill.“Residents wishing to recycle other plastic packaging, marked with a one, two or three, can do so at any of Wiltshire’s household recycling centres.”The new bins were introduced alongside the black boxes because plastic bottles and cardboard are bulky and need to be crushed, whereas the black box materials are sorted at the kerbside by crews to minimise contamination.
