Olympics cost £11.7bn - is it worth it?

Apart from the cost, and bearing in mind Governments (of all colours) seem completely unable to cost projects, are the Olympics value for money?  I think not!

The ordinary taxpayer is paying for something that is primarily a London event, and the ticket prices are such that only MP's, big businesses and foreign nationals can afford them (or even be allocated them)!!
The rest of us will have to rely on 24 hour TV coverage (a further insult to those who have no interest in sport whatsoever [but, Hey, the BBC knows better than us what we want to watch])

In my opinion, there is no way that the British taxpayer will see a return on this expenditure - just a loss (as with all Government grandiose schemes).

Can the British people trust their Government with their hard earned cash?  NO!

"Should we have pulled the plug on this five years ago, and accepted that we just don't have the resources to hold a major sporting event at the moment? Or is there more to it? Is this a moment when the whole country needs to pull together, to build and to regenerate and to show the world we are still capable of doing something spectacular?"

Judging by previous attempts by Government to "show the world we are still capable of doing something spectacular", i.e. like the Millenium Dome - maybe not!

"The country pulling together"?  Don't make me laugh!  The working people pulling one way, and Government, big business, illegal immigrants and the work shy pulling the other. (And we know who is winning!)

Sector9:
Definitely worth it in my opinion.

As a country we have to show we can put on an event like this so other nations have confidence in the UK's abilities to host a major world event.

The Olympics is also an opportunity to showcase how great this country is to the rest of the world, and will bring in millions of tourists not just for the events but before and after it too.

There are lots of other reasons too - but I'l keep it brief.

If you don't mind me saying Mike, you are such a cynic! ;) (No offence intended)

Al:
In round numbers... £12bn to put it on and the tv news this morning said an expected 6 billion person audience. So, £2 each. Just make your cheques payable to me ;)

Maybe I am being cynical (no offence taken) but I think that as the world is still in recession, the returns on the Olympics will be a complete LOSS!

6 Billion audience?  Where? Not in this country - there is no room!!  Worldwide Television audience?  How do these bring revenue into this country?
