I believe the game was first released in 1978, but it took a year or so to become really commonplace. Most people would remember playing the game as an early 80s bar game at around the same time as Donkey Kong and Pacman, rather than its first release date in the first places it appeared. It makes me remember that I used to only drink cider as I could not stand beer then.
Here's the link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Invaders My first score was about 8,600 and the following games took the score much higher as I remembered to get all the spaceships for extra points.
If I put my highest score, you wouldn't believe me anyway ... and I'd be accused of bragging or somthing similar ... I was pleased with the result.
I first played the game when I became a student at Bristol Polytechnic (now West of England University) in the old Surveying School at Unity Street, Bristol (right next to College Green by the main City Council building in the city centre). The student union bar had a Space Invaders machine and I first got my hands on it in October 1980.
There were no Space Invaders machines at Dauntsey's School and don't recall seeing any elsewhere myself prior to 1980.
