There are several reasons why many people take no notice of the opportunity to meet their local county councillors:
* Apathy. Many people can't be bothered to get involved in local issues unless it directly affects them ... in which case many just get on the phone and talk about it with council staff .... who are there to deal with sorting day-to-day issues anyway.
* Ignorance. Many people don't know who their councillors are and what they can do for you.
* At work or too busy anyway during the day when the county councillors were in the libraries.
* They realise that most local issues are handled by their local district councillors anyway (this is true - we deal with everything that comes our way, especially if we are on the town council as the town council can very effectively lobby the county council to do things).
I've thought about holding a "surgery" where people can meet me to ask about issues and see if I can help .... but I decided that as I am always snowed under anyway, there is no point. If people want my help, they tend to ring up, send a letter or email me.
