when we go away anywhere we usually go by the look of the room on the net ( if they got pictures) and how much it is initially. As we only use the room to sleep in and change our clothes so im not interested in how posh it is. so long as the bathroom is clean and tidy adn there are clean sheets on the bed thats usually good enough.
we have stayed in a few hotels over the past four years and have a couple of horror stories to tell

horror story
a couple of years ago we were going to warrington for the weekend. so i booked up a travel inn in the center by the bus station.
soon as we opened the door of our room the smell hit you straight in the face. it was a smoking room ( not bother by that) but the windows hadnt been opened for a very long time by the smell of stale smoke ( my partner smokes and our house didnt smell nothing like that) it was horrendus..i spent all night wheezing to start with. but hat wasnt the end. the bathroom was dirty. dirt and dust was onthe fllor( god only knows the last time it had been washed) the toilet haad a large long crack from the inside the bowl to the outside edge... all dirt was in it..looked revolting.. there was hair dotted around the bathroom too....... the bed was clean..we checked  lol.. the windows were filthy,( you could write your name in the dirt) inside and out but not as black as the nets were that were hanging in the window.... vareying of colours from off white to black at the top and bottom ( mould)  we stayed there 2 nights. on the morning we left i stripped the bed ( god knows why) and i felt sick... there was hair all over the matteress. you would have thought they wowuld have hoovered the matteress occasionally.... long ones short ones , black ones bbrown ones red adnblonde ones..... they couldnt have missed it becasue there was loads....even short  n curlies. we immediatly felt sick. and left . when we got back home i wrote a letter of complaint about our weekend there and the state of the room, not expecting to hear back from them. but i did. the letter stated they were sorry and went to the room to cheeck the state of it...some of the things were still there after a couple of weeks and have been remidied.... they didnt just give me a refun they refunded the whole of our costs and the parking charges for their own car park, credited back to the bank account.  i checked it and yes it was there..
pleased the had got back to me

we now stay in premier inns all over the country and have had no problems. some have their own pubs within the complex which is nice. some are posher than others , the food is always nice, the bed clean crisp sheets and a  king size bed  ( novel and nice)
we have not had a cause to complain about this chain and have stayed in them from cornwall to carlisle and plenty in between

ihave stayed in the posh end of the  hotel market as well.......  it just doesnt compare with premier inn at all   lol
the springs hotel group (fairmont) in canada and america are fabulous... the rooms outstanding...the views outstanding and the service is better than any thing you will find here.... all cheeerful no matter what the time day or night.. my brother and i and the parents stayed in some fab places when we did a land cruise through the rocky mountains ( sigh)  stayed in banff spsrings hotel, vancouver springs hotel, chatau lake louise to name just 3... myself and my brother were up at around 4ish in the morning and the staff where still alert and on hand and more than that  cheerful and chatty.... and they always ask if youre enjoying yourself and what are you going to do later and offer some advice on some good places to go

outstanding service...always with a smile no matter if you have a slight problem

Personal recommendation counts for a lot. Having worked with hotel and hotel affiliate sites for years I know not to trust much of what you read or see on them ;)
Ride fast, take chances. Just don't blame me when you fall off.

yes personal reccomendation does go a long way in your choices..
i had only stayed in a hotel for one night as an adult in the past 25 yrs so this new found freedom of going into hotels was a totally new concept for me i can ttell you....
travel inn certainly wont be used again.... eventhough i did get my money back..im going there again... premier travel inn are classed as budget accomodation but i was impressed with how clean it was and well appointed... some are brand new and modern with canopys and lots of glass and others up country are more oldy worly andlots of dark wood and beams... each have their own attributes and have delivered eexactly what we wanted.... good clean room and bathroom....quiet at nights and food on site in the resturant or adjoining pub which was even better....  i dont need the expensive touches which you pay through the nose for...  flash doesnt do it for me im afraid....even though i emensly enjoyed the flash in alaska  ;) that was just something else entirely
