I have just finished a book "Dirty Old London - The Victorian fight against filth" by Lee Jackson. It shows the fight for public conveniences, proper cemeteries, swimming pools, etc, etc.

It appears that present Government local funding cuts, as interpreted by Conservative Councils, are now destroying what the Victorians managed to achieve - Public conveniences closing (unless town councils take them over), swimming pools closing (unless town councils or other bodies take them over), increased charges for burials or cemeteries to close (unless town councils take them over { in those days corpses would be left in homes until the family could afford to have them buried}), etc. etc.

What next, fortnightly collections of your loved ones corpses ("Bring out your dead") and burial in lime pits?

Council houses to no longer have inside toilets (but communal cesspits) or washing facilities (but communal stand pipes)?

Our Government is committed to a "foreign aid" commitment (providing a new fishing fleet to the Caribbean and new football pitches to China), but is no longer willing to provide funds for basic social needs in this Country.

This country is in serious risk of going back to the pre-Victorian age!

I blame Osborne mainly.Take a look at his latest hair brained scheme.

Does he seriously think that low paid employees on tax credits can actually save?

By the way, if they can they obviously aren't low paid.

He will only announce this because he knows there will be few, if any, takers. Big publicity - No cost!

If they can afford to save, they should have their tax credits taken away. Taken from the gospel according to IDS
