ELEPHANT HAWK MOTH
« on: August 12, 2016, 16:12:46 PM »
For the first time ever in my life I've seen a huge caterpillar ..  I've had my own gardens as an adult since I was 18 and it's the first time I've seen anything so big .

It's been identified as a elephant hawk moth caterpillar which loves fuchsias as I've found out .  So it is stuck to only the one fuchsia at the moment ..as it turns into a chrysalis in sept I'm hoping it won't be eating much more lol.
We have been checking on it daily as anyone who followers Westbury gardeners on fb will see .   It's got me excited just because I've never seen it as a caterpillar or a moth before ..it's quite beautiful as a moth .   So hoping we will be able to see it change in may time

At the moment it's as thick as my thumb and about 4 inches long ...

On the second photo (the close up)  you can see a large black block of something .  That I'm thinking is its poo. I've found it all over this one fuchsia and fallen on the patio .  It's quite large and looks like a black mini sweetcorn lol.

Blimey, what a  strange looking thing!  Looks like a big eye lol.
I hope I don't get one on my Fuschias, wouldn't think it would take long to chomp it's way  through a plant!!
You'll be very lucky to see it change in May.
Is it time for your Medication or mine?
