I have some sympathy for him. Not a lot I have to say but the accident in which the girl was killed, in my opinion, wasn't entirely his fault. She was driving it at the time.

If this was his defence he should have attended court and put that defence forward, however it would appear there were witnesses who contradict his version of events (Charlotte was in control).  He would have known this, and weighed up the evidence against his version of events and took the cowards way out.
