A few thoughts on the current crisis.

1. The lowest paid in society will end up doing the most during this outbreak, nurses, paramedics, drivers, delivery driver, care workers etc. whilst grossly overpaid footballers and celebs will contribute F all.

2. We hopefully may see the end of 'celeb' culture. Most are talent less and survive on the oxygen of publicity and posting pics of themselves at events or on holiday. With papers devoting column inches to more important issues,and the restriction of travel, and cancellation of events they may just wither on the vine, starved of publicity. Maybe society will take a look at itself and decide what is important in life.

3. Probably won't hear much more from Greta, after all the current situation we find ourselves in is what Extinction Rebellion are calling for, the public have had an insight into their vision of the world.

These views are pretty much what I've thought all along.  Compare the 1957-8 influenza pandemic: nine million UK citizens were infected and 14,000 died, but there were no emergency measures and little economic disruption.  "Normal" seasonal influenza kills over 20,000 per year; most of the people concerned would die soon from other natural causes anyway; pneumonia used to be called "the old man's friend", as it spared the victim the pains of senescence.  Sacrificing the economy and all civil liberties to lessen the current epidemic makes no sense at all; the latter step is the most dangerous as it seems to be causing the loss of all sense of proportion.

I not sure we do disagree entirely, you seem to be saying that the government got it wrong, I agree, maybe we have different reasons for believing this, so I offer you the following.

This is a very good analysis and why I think they got it wrong, and continue to do so.

I look forward to the public inquiry, but in the meantime as long as the government continues to follow the advice of the official medical and scientific advisers, they must be allowed to do their job. On this basis, the inquiry will be mostly about whether the official advice given was correct and whether it was followed properly.

I have to say that no-one should think that cabinet members are automatically responsible for anything that goes wrong.  The NHS has a huge system for procuring all sorts of kit and stuff and all sorts of senior directors have been deciding what to buy and where to store stuff and what logistics they use to distribute it. MPs can't really be expected to know all the details but they are going to have to explain what they have done to sort the problems once the problems became clear.  Someone somewhere needs their backside kicked very hard indeed for the mess that has emerged in terms of getting personal protective equipment (PPE) to those who need it. It seems that some senior logistics folk could not organise anything quickly and need real professionals to do the job for them (eg. the military).

I have to agree with Baldy over the PPE debacle. Not sure why this has landed an the feet of government after all the NHS should have been preparing for this and buying the PPE that would be required.

The NHS has suffered, as have most government bodies, from the austerity policies, it has been underfunded and forced to cut services.
