Title: New Fish n Chip Restaurant in old Britannia / Co-Op bank premises, High Street
Post by: baldy on January 25, 2020, 21:10:30 pm
It looks like the people who were trying to set up a fish n chip shop (restaurant and take-away) in the former Midland Bank / HSBC / Santander / Co-Op bank premises are back and have obtained planning permission to change the position of the extract flue outside the building, so it looks like they are now going ahead.

Here is the link to the owner's business web site: https://www.harlees.co.uk/ (https://www.harlees.co.uk/)

They've added Westbury to the Locations page.

Details of the recent application and decision are here: https://unidoc.wiltshire.gov.uk/UniDoc/Document/Search/DSA,906171 (https://unidoc.wiltshire.gov.uk/UniDoc/Document/Search/DSA,906171)

Are you sure it was a former HSBC / Midland / Santander bank? Pretty sure we've never had a Santander bank, and I think the Midlan was the opposite side next to the butchers.

Their website needs some work, some of the links go to page 404.

Their community page, which there is no link to (you can only get there via the site map) seems to be still under construction https://www.harlees.co.uk/harlees-in-the-community/

Yes, I am sure.  I remember all the fascia / name panels and I actually banked with Midland there until I transferred to First Direct (now part of HSBC) in the 80s.

The bank opposite and next to the current butcher (originally Chantry TV - a company that my brother eventually half-owned prior to shutting every branch down to focus on Chantry Digital, its sister company that supplies and installs TV and video / satellite / broadband kit all over the UK to pubs / hotels etc) was NatWest, who actually still have the long head-lease and still pay rent.

Well, when a site is under construction, its normal to not put up a link to a page until its ready.

Some good reviews on Trip Advisor and Google, the odd bad review but in general the majority are positive.

I expect it will be really popular not least because it will the only proper fish n chip shop restaurant in Westbury.  I'm expecting to be told by my elderly Mum that she wants to visit as soon as she knows it is open.

It may actually have a good effect on the High Street during lunch times ...

Yes. I was wrong about Santander. I should have said that Britannia merged with Co-Op and in Westbury the Britannia branch became Co-Op.  Originally, the new double unit in the 60s was a Midland Bank which later became rebranded as HSBC. Britannia moved in after HSBC closed there.

Been away for a few weeks. Went to the chemist this morning and see the new Fish & Chip restaurant (Harlee's) is either now open or about to open. Had a peek inside and it looks pretty smart. Hope the fish & chips are as good.

I've seen it like this for a few weeks now but I have not yet actually seen it open.
